The 41st Annual Winona State University High School Honor Band Festival 2018 was held November 2 and 3.
Six musicians were selected to attend from the Big Lake HS Bands: McKenna Peterson, alto sax; Sasha Walden, bass clarinet; Hailey Crowe, horn; Erika Werner, percussion; Gabby Klinkenborg, alto sax; and Marissa Heltemes, flute.
The Festival band included 93 musicians from 25 high schools throughout Minnesota & Wisconsin. They began rehearsals on Friday afternoon which continued on Saturday along with master classes led by college faculty. The Festival concluded with a concert at 5:00 p.m. in the PAC Vivian Fusillo Theatre on the Winona State Campus. The band was directed by Dr. Melanie Brooks, Director of Bands, Winona State University.
The music performed included: "An American Fanfare" – Rick Kirby; "Nordwarts" – Antti Nissila; "American Riversongs" – Pierre La Plante; “Hennepin County Dawn” – Samuel R. Hazo; “Street Tango” – Astor Piazzolla; ”Abracadabra” - Frank Ticheli; “Chasing Sunlight” - Cait Nishimura & “Hands Across the Sea” - John Philip Sousa.
The students had a great experience learning and performing alongside other outstanding high school musicians at Winona State University
