Independence Elementary STEM named a STEM School of Excellence

We are so proud to announce that Independence Elementary STEM was recently named a STEM School of Excellence by the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA)!

The STEM School of Excellence award recognizes schools that are committed and leading the way for innovation in the field of STEM Education. According to the ITEEA website, the designation was created to “officially recognize those schools whose teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders are providing a meaningful STEM education experience for students.”

To be recognized, Independence Elementary STEM first had to go through a rigorous application process. A panel of reviewers assessed submitted documentation and determined that the school “represents excellence in Integrative STEM education.”

Only a select few schools receive this honor. Last year, only 10 schools across the nation were recognized.

This isn’t the first time Independence Elementary STEM was recognized for its STEM programming. Just last year, the school received the 2022 STEM Innovation Award. Presented in partnership between the Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association (MESPA) and the Science Museum of Minnesota, the STEM Innovation Award is given to one Minnesota elementary school each year in recognition of innovative initiatives in their school.

Since becoming an official STEM school in September 2019, Independence Elementary STEM has been committed to making learning more engaging through a STEM-driven curriculum. In addition to specific STEM-focused classes, STEM practices are integrated within all content areas across all classes. Students regularly engage in learning that follows the Engineering Design Process and utilizes the 4Cs: Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, and Critical Thinking.

The school will be presented with the STEM School of Excellence honor at the ITEEA national conference in April.
