Important Back to School Information

Dear Big Lake Schools Community,

The start of the school year is rapidly approaching! We are excited to welcome our students back to school! As we approach the start of the year, please read the following reminders carefully.

Infinite Campus Updates

Infinite Campus is a software system where parents and students can monitor grades, standardized test scores, attendance and more. The system is also used to communicate important information from Big Lake Schools. We ask that all families login to Infinite Campus as soon as possible to update their contact information or student information.

You can login to Infinite Campus here. After logging in, select “More” on the left hand side. Click “Annual Update” and “Start.” All families, regardless if you have attended Big Lake Schools previously, will be walked through “New Student Registration.” Previously enrolled students will have their information automatically populated. Please verify that all information is accurate.

If you do not have an account with Infinite Campus, please contact the main office of your child’s school.

Transportation

New this year, you will be able to opt into transportation through Infinite Campus. When you login to Infinite Campus, you will automatically be prompted to fill all relevant information for transportation. Please complete this by August 4.

BusWhere App

We are excited to continue using the tracking service called BusWhere. Parents, guardians and students will be able to watch buses on a map in real-time, see how long the bus spends at each stop, and receive notifications with real-time ETAs and automatic notifications if a bus is running late.

Once Vision Transportation has completed routing buses, they will email you a unique invitation to download the app (Note: you will only be able to see your students’ bus route and stop information).

Educational Benefits

New this year, you will be able to complete the Educational Benefits Application, commonly known as the Free and Reduced Price Meals Application, through Infinite Campus as well. When you login to Infinite Campus, you will automatically be prompted to fill in all relevant information.

Our district receives funding based on the number of approved applications. Benefits of filling out this form not only include free or reduced price meals, but also:

  • Help maintain lower class sizes
  • Help maintain student support services
  • Increased funding for technology
  • Discounts on athletic and activity fees
  • Discounted SAT, ACT, and Advanced Placement test fees

School Meals

The United States Department of Agriculture did not extend the free meal program for the 2022-23 school year. Meals will no longer be provided free of charge to all students. Families are encouraged to ensure their My School Bucks account is up to date and has funds available for school meals prior to the start of the school year. Breakfast for kindergarten students remains free of charge.

New this year, students will not be assigned a “pin number” when purchasing meals. Our food service program has updated their system to include a fingerprint identification system (much like unlocking a phone or technology device). This new system will allow students to check out much faster and will allow additional time for eating meals or enjoying recess.

You can find more information regarding school meals, including our policies on our website

Technology Agreement

This upcoming school year students in grades kindergarten through 2nd will receive school issued iPads for use at school and home. Grades 3-12 will receive school issued Chromebooks for use at school and home. If your student was enrolled in Big Lake Schools last year, they will receive the same device. These devices will give students seamless access to their Google Apps account, Seesaw, Otus and any web-based resources. Devices and all accessories will be distributed at the beginning of the school year.

We recognize with the implementation of technology in the classroom there is a responsibility to maintain that technology. We are moving away from offering a Technology Protection Plan, and are instead implementing a per incident cost for damage to devices. Non-warranty repair, accidental damage (drops/spills), cracked screens, etc. will be charged $30 per incident. Replacement chargers will be $25. Should the device be beyond repair, replacement charges will apply.

All families in grades K-12 must review and complete the Technology Loan Agreement before receiving their school issued device. When you login to Infinite Campus, you will automatically be prompted to fill all relevant information for the agreement.

School Supply Lists

We encourage all families to begin purchasing their school supplies for the upcoming year. With nation-wide supply chain shortages, we want our students to be successful on day one, without missing necessary supplies. You can find supply lists for each building below:

Please be on the lookout for additional communication from us as we approach the start of the school year. We look forward to seeing your student in just a few short weeks!

Sincerely,

Tim Truebenbach
