2021-22 School Meals

Dear Parent/Guardian:

We are excited to share with you that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is extending the meal service waiver offered to school districts through the end of next school year. This means that Big Lake Schools will once again be offering free meals for all children grades preK-12 each school day. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at no cost to all children enrolled in Big Lake Schools.

Even though meals are free this year, we still need help from our families. School districts receive additional funding based on the number of approved free and reduced meal benefit applications. Last year, due to the low number of applications turned in, our district lost approximately $270,000 in state funding! Please take time to complete an application to help us continue to receive additional funds. To download a paper application or learn more about this benefit, visit our website here. You may also complete the application online through your Parent Portal by clicking on applications and forms.

Benefits of filling out this application not only include free or reduced price meals, but also:

  • Discounted SAT, ACT, and Advanced Placement test fees
  • Discounts on athletic and activity fees
  • Increased funding for technology
  • Help maintain lower class sizes
  • Help maintain student support services
  • And much more!

In addition, families may be eligible for federal P-EBT benefits if an application is submitted and approved by September 3rd, 2021. The Minnesota Department of Education is waiting for further clarification from the United States of Agriculture on this important benefit. In the meantime, don’t delay, and fill out your application today!

Sincerely,

Tim Truebenbach
