Big Lake Middle School and High School in Distance Learning tomorrow, March 24.

Dear Big Lake Schools Community,

Today, Middle School and High School staff received their second dose of the Moderna vaccine which was provided by Sherburne County Public Health. Unfortunately, we know that the second dose of the vaccination may cause individuals to experience negative side effects such as fevers, chills, headaches, and tiredness. Due to an already high number of staff out of our buildings and limited substitute availability, the Middle School and High School will engage in Distance Learning tomorrow, March 24. All other buildings will continue with their in-person learning schedule. Middle School and High School students are expected to follow their distance learning expectations for attendance.

Why was the vaccination clinic not timed for a Friday or lined up with a non-school day?

Unfortunately, when our staff received their initial vaccinations 28 days ago, vaccines were not as commonly available as they are now. While we requested that clinics be timed on Fridays or lined up with a long weekend, this was not available at the time of the initial vaccination dose.

Why wasn’t there a plan in place for substitute teachers?

A plan was in place to accommodate a large number of absences which included additional substitute teachers, staff from other buildings, and utilizing myself and other school administrators as substitute teachers. Unfortunately, more staff members will be absent from the buildings tomorrow than initially anticipated due to COVID-19 quarantine guidelines, illnesses, etc.

Why did I not receive a text message or phone call?

Infinite Campus requires families to opt into emergency texts/phone calls as not all families have access to a cell phone or unlimited text messaging.

If you wish to opt into texts/phone calls in the event of school closings, please follow these steps:

  • Login to your Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
  • In the top right corner, click on your avatar.
  • Click on Settings
  • Click on Contact Preferences
  • Under Message Preferences, select how you prefer to receive messages by checking Voice, Text (SMS), or Email.

Thank you for your understanding in these difficult and inconvenient circumstances.

Sincerely,

Tim Truebenbach

Superintendent
