Beginning Monday, September 14, Big Lake Schools will be offering free meals for all children grades preK-12 each day. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at no cost to all children enrolled in Big Lake Schools. This is feasible due to an extension of the meal service waiver offered through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The USDA has limited funding available to schools. Due to the limited funding, Big Lake Schools will participate in this program through October 31. If funding allows, we will continue offering free meals after October 31. At that point, we will communicate the status of this program with all families.
In the meantime, we want to provide a few reminders to our families:
We encourage all families to continue to complete a Free and Reduced Application if you believe that you may qualify. Please complete the application as soon as possible in order to receive the meal benefits when we transition to regular meal prices.
In the event that we are required to switch to regular meal prices after October 31, we encourage families to leave money in your student’s lunch account(s). Funds in your student’s account will remain there throughout the course of the school year.
The Middle School and High School will continue to offer a la carte items at an extra cost. Students will need to have money in their accounts in order to charge for these items (i.e. extra milk, seconds, snacks, etc).
We are incredibly grateful to participate in this program and help alleviate financial costs for our families.
