ACT & ASVAB Testing Information

BLHS Juniors,

It is time to decide whether you would like to take the ACT or ASVAB this spring.  Our school will be offering all juniors the opportunity to take the ACT or ASVAB exam during the school day on Tuesday, March 30th.  The ACT exam will include the writing component, and generally take about 4.5 hours to complete.  The ASVAB test generally takes 3-4 hours to complete.  Students who sign up to take either assessment will be excused from school that day.

Why take the ACT?

The ACT is a college entrance exam that tests students on their understanding of English, math, reading, science, and writing.  Students will also be able to select up to four colleges to receive their ACT score at no cost.  Even if you are unsure about going to college, or the college you are applying to doesn’t require the ACT, many students still find that the test is worth your time to take.  All students will receive a personalized ACT report that provides valuable information about your post-high school readiness, as well as career pathways that fit your interests and skills.

Cost:  Big Lake Public Schools is offering to pay half the cost of the ACT, making the total cost for each student $30.00; the state of Minnesota is covering the total cost of the ACT for students who are eligible for free/reduced lunch.  Any student who would like to inquire about economic assistance to cover the ACT fee should email Ms. Folch.

To Sign Up for the ACT:  If you wish to take the ACT exam, sign up by using your Affinity account.  You will need to go online to the SmartSchool K12 site and click on “High School Fees” under the Activity Registration & Class Fees tab.   You can add the ACT test to your cart.  Once you are paid, you will be registered for the test.  If you are unable to pay online, you may bring a check to the high school office written out to BLHS.  The registration deadline to sign up for the ACT is February 5, 2021.

ASVAB Information: The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple choice test, administered by the United States Military Entrance Processing Command, used to determine qualification for enlistment in the United States' armed forces.  It is often offered to U.S. high school students when they are in the 10th, 11th and 12th grade, though anyone eligible for enlistment may take it.  Any student who is considering a career in the military should sign up to take the ASVAB.  There is no cost to take the ASVAB, and it can provide valuable information regarding future career pathways.  For students who would rather take the ASVAB than the ACT, we will also offer this test on March 30th.  To sign up for the ASVAB, please email Jen Folkens.

Practice Exam:  We have ACT practice booklets in the Counseling Office!  We highly recommend preparing for the ACT by using the practice booklet to become familiar with the test.   Especially since the exam will be a paper/pencil test rather than online.  Remember to time yourself as you complete each section!  Students can drop by the Counseling Office to pick up as many booklets as they need.

Online Test Prep – Online practice ACT and ASVAB questions are available in the students’ Minnesota Career Information System (MCIS) account.  For students to log into their MCIS account, go to the MCIS website and your username is first.last22 and your password is Blake00000# (your student ID # - may need to use 0 before your ID number to make five digits).  Once logged in, you can find the ACT or ASVAB prep under the “My Portfolio” tab and then select “Test Prep”.

In the meantime, please do not hesitate to email Ms. Folch if you have any questions.
