NHS Lock-in Raises $3,051 for Open Doors Organization

Big Lake High School’s National Honor Society (NHS) donated $3,051 to the nonprofit organization Open Doors at this year’s annual lock-in event.

Open Doors, a nonprofit organization located in Elk River, provides a safe place for youth experiencing homelessness.  It provides a hot meal, canned food, and healthy snacks for evenings and weekends, clothing, computer access for online school, towels, personal hygiene items, and access to resources for health and other issues.

The lock-in, previously known as the dance-a-thon, is the student group’s largest event of the year. In order to attend the event, an NHS student must raise at least $25 in donations.  All donations then get presented to a charity selected by the student group.

Participating students get locked in the high school starting at 7 p.m. and can’t leave until 6 a.m. the following morning. To pass the time, students watch movies, play games, and dance. Local businesses donate food and prizes for the event.

This is NHS’s 12th year of holding the event.
