Welcome to Big Lake Middle School

  • Big Lake Middle School is home to students in grades 6-8, and boasts a very creative, innovative, and historical atmosphere. Featured throughout the school are large pieces of innovative artwork students have created in class using metals, woods, and various other materials. Additionally, the main entrance of the school showcases the district's history by displaying various artifacts such as original school board meeting meetings, letterman jackets, photos, etc. Students take great pride and ownership in their school because of its atmosphere, which creates a welcoming environment for all learners.

    Core and Encore Options

Middle school students attend core classes daily consisting of math, language arts, science and social studies. Students can choose to attend band or choir on days that alternate with physical education classes. Additionally, students attend encore classes that rotate each trimester. These include a Project Lead the Way class, personal enrichment classes, health and art. Classes available vary depending on grade level.

    STEM Education

STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) programming is available for all students at the middle school through Project Lead the Way (PLTW) classes. Students attend, depending on grade level, either computer science, design and modeling, or automation and robotics. These courses help students develop essential skills for the 21st Century such as critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. Our students are exposed to many robot challenges and 3D printing opportunities.

Creating Good Citizens Through Enrichment Classes

Our district wide focus on good citizenship continues at the middle school where students take enrichment classes aimed at helping students develop necessary life skills.  These classes include writing, interpersonal communications, mentoring, civil citizenship, mindset matters, service learning projects, teen life, and many more.

    WIN (What I Need) Time

Middle school students enjoy WIN Time twice per week in which they get to choose what they need to work on and where. This could include time to complete work, seek out a teacher for additional support, or work on enrichment activities.

    After-school Activities and Class Fees

Middle school students have access to a wide variety of after-school activities such as Geography Bee, Knowledge Bowl, Math Masters, Student Council, and 20+ MN High School League athletics. Check out the activities website for all of the options available and to pay class fees.
