• Spaulding High School English

    Freshman English
This is a foundation class for all freshman students.  They will read works of fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry.  Emphasis will also be placed on communication skills, writing conventions, vocabulary, and grammar.  Students will also make independent reading choices each trimester.
    EXCEL Freshman English
Students who participate in EXCEL English will be challenged to read widely, analyze in depth, and learn to write with accuracy and enthusiasm.  Analysis of short stories, novels, poems, and various styles of writing compositions are integrated into the EXCEL English curriculum.  A willingness to grow as readers, writers, researchers, and communicators is necessary for success in EXCEL English.
    Advanced Composition
This composition course is designed for college-bound students who need to develop skills necessary for success in college or to develop a writing portfolio for college admission.  The major compositions will be a literary analysis based on Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and research papers that emphasize the inquiry process and use of both primary and secondary sources. Students will also write an Educational Autobiography, Trend Analysis Research Paper, and an Ethnography.
