In light of districtwide budget adjustments and in efforts to ensure that every taxpayer dollar goes directly towards education, Big Lake Schools will now implement a convenience fee for all transactions made via electronic payments for school-related expenses. This change went into effect July 1, 2026, and will impact areas such as community education, nutrition services, class and activity fees, gate entry fees, and other point-of-purchase sales.

This adjustment, mirroring what is becoming common practice among businesses, schools, and other public entities, comes as part of the district’s multi-year budget adjustment plan. Historically, the district absorbed significant transaction costs from third-party card processing fees. Passing these fees to the cardholder will help ensure that maximum funding remains directed toward classroom instruction and student services. As fees are collected directly by the card processor, the district will not profit from such payments.

For those looking to avoid such fees, alternative payment methods will be available. Payments made via cash or personal check will continue to be processed without any additional convenience fees.

This decision was approved by the school board following a public hearing in May.
