Liberty Elementary, Independence Elementary STEM, and Big Lake Middle School were recently recognized by the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) for their sustained commitment to the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework during the 2024–25 school year.
Recognized schools have demonstrated exceptional leadership in improving school climate, engaging the community, and increasing student achievement. This year, ninety-three schools across forty-one Minnesota school districts received the recognition and were honored at a ceremony on August 14.
PBIS is an evidence-based, tiered approach to behavior that supports students’ academic, social, emotional, and mental well-being. When implemented with fidelity, PBIS has been shown to improve student outcomes and create a safe, supportive learning environment where all students feel welcome.
The framework emphasizes proactive strategies for encouraging positive behavior, focusing on prevention rather than punishment.
At Big Lake Schools, students are intentionally taught clear expectations that align with the district’s behavioral philosophy, The Hornet Way. When misbehaviors occur, staff reteach appropriate behaviors and use restorative practices to resolve issues. School-wide PBIS teams continuously review behavior data and develop procedures to address areas of concern.
