On Tuesday, Nov. 12, Independence Elementary STEM hosted Big Lake Schools’ annual Veterans Day celebration, welcoming approximately 150 guests to honor our nation’s heroes.
The morning began with a breakfast for veterans and their families, served by members of The Independence Elementary STEM Student Council and the High School National Honor Society. Following breakfast, guests made their way to the gym to begin the program. The ceremony opened with a presentation of colors by the Big Lake Legion Color Guard, followed by the national anthem performed by the high school choir. The Independence Student Council then led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Principal Deavel welcomed the guests, inviting veterans from each branch of the military to stand and be recognized by the crowd. Three fifth-grade students—Etta Rusert, Logan Kopotic, and Lynea Bohrman—shared essays on what Veterans Day means to them.
“These sweet, kind, and brave people are reasons why the United States is so great,” read Rusert. “They need to know how great they are and that we appreciate them.”
Ms. Schneider, a fifth-grade teacher and former Army National Guard member, read "The Impossible Patriotism Project," a children’s book about a boy named Caleb who struggles coming up with an idea for a project on patriotism to display at his school’s parent night while his father is away on active duty.
The program also included musical performances from fourth graders, who sang “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee,” as well as closing remarks from Superintendent Tim Truebenbach.
Fourth-grade students were present throughout the entire ceremony, fifth-grade students greeted guests as they entered the gymnasium, and third graders thanked them on their way out. The students also worked hard to create Veterans Day-themed artwork, which hung in the halls for guests to see.
A huge thank you to the Independence team for putting together such a great event.
To the Veterans and their families in attendance: thank you for your service, and thank you for spending your morning with us. It was an honor and a privilege to celebrate you!
Are you or someone you know a Big Lake High School Alum who is serving or has served in the armed forces? Let us know so we can recognize you on our Hornet Wall of Honor!
